In Lake County, Shirley Heinze Land Trust says it has acquired its first parcel of land along Deep River, 23 acres in New Chicago purchased from the American Legion. The nonprofit said funding came from a long-term donor and that thanks to that support this land within the river floodplain will be preserved for marsh bird habitat and part of a larger project to improve community access.
