In northwest Indiana, NIPSCO says Sunday, August 11, 2024 — 8/11– serves as a natural and crucial reminder to contact 811 before digging to avoid damaging buried utilities. The Merrillville-based company says every digging project, large or small, from building a deck to planting a tree, warrants contacting 811 by phone or online at least two full working days before breaking ground so local utility companies can mark the location of buried lines. It’s a free service. NIPSCO says the depth of utility lines can vary for a variety of reasons, including erosion, previous digging projects and uneven surfaces.
