Indiana Conservation Officers are reminding everyone to use caution around lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, and retention ponds and to watch for others who may find themselves in trouble on frozen waterways. They said assume no ice is safe ice and to remember that a new coating of snow can also make for treacherous ice conditions as it can serve as insulation, causing water to freeze at a slower rate. They pointed out that some bodies of water can appear to be frozen solid but still have thin ice in several unexpected areas. Conservation officers also said if you see an animal in distress on the ice to contact local emergency response personnel who are equipped to make a rescue.
