In northern Porter County, Liberty Township Volunteer Fire says over the last 47 days, they’ve answered 149 calls for service thanks to dedicated volunteers, but they need more help. “Our department is facing a growing challenge-just like many other fire departments-struggling to recruit new volunteers,” a news release said. Currently, Liberty Volunteer Fire says fifteen active members are responding to over 1,100 calls annually. There are many ways to play a role, including — Firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT); Emergency Response Support at the scene like traffic control and more; Administrative Support Help with essential paperwork, grant writing, and communication; Equipment Maintenance to ensure trucks and gear are always ready, and Fundraising and Community Outreach. The department stressed that every role is critical and you don’t have to be a firefighter to make a difference. Liberty’s response area includes ZIP Codes for Valparaiso, Chesterton, and Westville.
