The National Weather Service Chicago says a line of severe storms Sunday March 30, 2025, produced a tornado in northwest Indiana, rated EF-0 on the strength scale, confirmed in the Lake Village area of northern Newton County, on the ground for five minutes around 2:30pm CT, traveling just over six miles, starting a couple miles west of U.S. 41 and lifting north of State Road 10. Meteorologists also say damaging winds ranging from 70 to locally 90 mph impacted a wide area from eastern Lake County, Indiana, northeast through central and northern Porter County. The National Weather Service (NWS) summary says the most intense damage was in and around Valparaiso especially “near and south of US-30, where several structures lost roofing materials, a semi truck was rolled onto a person leading to a fatality, and trees were snapped and felled onto homes.” They say an 81 mph wind gust from the southwest was measured by NWS-maintained observing equipment at Porter County Regional Airport before power failed.
