In Whiting, city officials say the Park Department discovered over forty deceased ducks along the shoreline of Whihala Beach last week. A news release said in light of all the issues in the U.S. regarding bird flu, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) was immediately contacted and the Whiting Park Department was advised to set aside two of the ducks for DNR research. Officials say it’s believed recent north winds and ice thaw contributed to the carcasses washing up on the beach, and with the carcasses encased in ice or frozen on the ground, some of the birds still remain. The Whiting Park Department is checking the beach daily to remove what they can, and the city is advising the public to avoid walking near the shoreline, to take caution when walking on the beach and to always leash pets.
