In Gary, Mayor Eddie Melton recently signed an executive order acknowledging the creation of the city’s first Age-Friendly Advisory Council in partnership with AARP. The AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities is a national initiative. Gary’s Age-Friendly Advisory Council will begin its first year by conducting a community needs assessment that will be distributed in senior facilities and via social media. It will look at a variety of areas including outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, health services, and housing. Nearly 100 million people live in towns, cities, counties, territories, or states that are part of this network, the announcement said.
