Ports of Indiana says it shipped 13 million tons of cargo in 2024, the second-highest annual volume in the port authority’s 60-year history. A news release says one of the largest overall increases was road salt, which was shipped at record levels during recent winter storms. The release also said the Burns Harbor port handled 2.8 million tons of barge, laker, and ocean cargo, up five percent from 2023. Last year, cargo shipments increased during the fourth straight year for the statewide port authority, up three percent from 2023 and second best to the 2018 record of 14.8 million tons, the Ports of Indiana said. Established in 1961, Ports of Indiana operates three ports, two on the Ohio River and the Burns Harbor port on Lake Michigan. The two downstate ports are Jeffersonville and Mount Vernon.
