The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and partner organizations announce an open house focused on restoration efforts within the Grand Calumet River Area of Concern (AOC) in Northwest Indiana. Community members may come anytime during the event to engage with project and program staff about the AOC restoration work, a news release from IDEM said. Guided hikes of Gibson Woods will be held at 3:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 5:30 p.m. IDEM is encouraging Region residents who live or work in Hammond, Whiting, East Chicago, and Gary to attend. The Grand Calumet River Area of Concern (AOC) covers a 94-square mile area in northern Lake County, Indiana. Families are welcome. Materials and educational activities will be available for school-age children. The event is Thursday, September 28, 2023, 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. CDT at Gibson Woods Nature Center on Parrish Avenue in Hammond. Here is a link for more information.
