The National Weather Service Chicago is confirming multiple tornado touchdowns including one in Northwest Indiana Tuesday night. The tornado in Gary was on the far northwest side of the city near Lake Michigan and registered EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale of estimated wind speed. Officials surveyed storm damage yesterday Wednesday February 28 2024 and said at a total of at least eleven tornadoes touched down across the Chicago area during the evening of February 27, 2024. The other tornadoes all registered either EF-0 or EF-1. Preliminary data show the Gary tornado touched down at 9:15 pm and was on the ground for about three minutes for two-point-two miles before traveling to the east out onto the lake.
