The Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County invites residents to visit a compost site during International Compost Awareness Week, May 6-11, 2024. In celebration, the District says it will offer free loading of compost and mulch for Porter County residents Monday, May 6 through Saturday, May 11, 2024 at the Portage and Valparaiso Compost Sites. Non-residents will be charged a fee of $10/ per cubic yard for compost. Limit of 9 cubic yards a day per resident, the announcement said.
The Valparaiso Compost Site is on West Lincolnway, Valparaiso, IN:
Loading hours for compost and mulch: Monday-Saturday 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 12:30 p.m.-2 p.m.
The Portage Compost Site is on U.S. 12, Portage, IN:
Loading hours for compost and mulch: Monday – Friday: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
“Composting is a resourceful method for recycling organic materials such as leaves and grass clippings, which create a nutrient-rich soil amendment. Compost can improve lawn and garden health, reduce soil erosion, keep waste out of landfills, and create carbon rich soil,” the district said in a news release.
