The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration says cooling centers will be open across the state for those in need of a safe and cool place to stay and Hoosiers can call 211 to find locations. A news release also said community navigators are available 24/7 and can provide updated locations and hours of local cooling centers. Here is a link to find a list of cooling centers across Indiana.
In Valparaiso, the city says the following Cooling Centers will be in place this week and during future heat waves: Valparaiso YMCA, Porter County Public Library- Valparaiso Branch, and Housing Opportunities. Also, the Valparaiso Police Department offers a program for individuals who may need help during weather emergencies. The Contact Assistance Referral, CARE, Program means police will check on residents during harsh weather. In Hammond, Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. has announced that due to the extreme heat expected this week the city will utilize all park department buildings as cooling centers. A news release from the city of Hammond said individuals may use these facilities during regular operating hours if necessary to cool down from the high temperatures in the local forecast.
