We haven’t seen much rain in the Region lately, though we could see scattered showers and storms today and during the holiday weekend. The National Weather Service also says it’s possible one or two storms could become strong or briefly severe this afternoon. It was 45 years ago yesterday, on June 30, 1977, that tornadoes touched down in the Gary, Hobart and Lake Station area. An online map courtesy of Purdue and the Midwestern Regional Climate Center and the NOAA/National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center shows an EF-2 tornado traveled over six miles from just southwest of downtown Hobart to South Haven shortly before 3pm and an EF-1 with a shorter path a couple minutes later touching down in Gary just west of I-65 and traveling along Ridge Road through Hobart, Lake Station and New Chicago. Here is a link to view the tornado paths that day (click on Filter by Magnitude to show EF 0, EF 1 and EF 2 tornadoes).
