Cleanup is underway in northwest Indiana and Chicago area and southwest Michigan after severe storms knocked down trees and caused power outages. Preliminary storm reports say several trees were downed across northern LaPorte County especially in Long Beach. Storms traveled through the area last night Tuesday August 27, 2024, after two days of extreme heat. NIPSCO this morning Wednesday August 28, 2024, was reporting over 3,900 outages across their service area, including over 1,600 in Michigan City and 950 in Laporte. Preliminary storm reports say trees were downed across northern LaPorte County, including Michigan City, LaPorte, and Long Beach. The National Weather Service Northern Indiana also says just north of the Indiana-Michigan state line, large trees were reported down onto homes and several cars in Union Pier, Michigan, a few miles north of New Buffalo.
