In Lake County, art activities and guided hikes will be part of a free “Wetlands and Watercolors” Nature in the Arts event, 10 am to 1 pm Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Ivanhoe South Nature Preserve on Colfax Street in Gary. Shirley Heinze Land Trust says participants will learn why wetlands are crucial for wildlife and people. South Shore Arts will provide instruction and Indiana-based artist Avon Waters will demonstrate how art can be used to better understand and appreciate nature. The public is also welcome to enjoy guided hikes along the 0.6-mile trail at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and partake in snacks and refreshments provided. “The dune and swale landscape of Ivanhoe South Nature Preserve is unique in that it shows where the old glacial lake shorelines used to be,” said Mari Patis, Programs Coordinator at Shirley Heinze Land Trust. “Visiting the preserve allows visitors to connect with the history of the land and appreciate this rare phenomenon only found along the Great Lakes coasts.” Here is a link to the Shirley Heinze Land Trust website for more details.
