The Region is bracing for a winter storm with strong winds and heavy snowfall. The National Weather Service has updated the forecasts for Northwest Indiana, which include Blizzard and Winter Storm Warnings. Total snow accumulations from two to five inches ranging to higher amounts, six inches to a foot or more heading toward LaPorte County and southwestern lower Michigan. Wind gusts as high as 50 mph expected with wind chill values of 25 to 35 below zero expected. Region News Team Meteorologist Matt Wintz says we’re likely going to see “ground blizzards” in the area; he’ll also have updates at RegionWeather.com . The National Weather Service says a typical ground blizzard happens when an Arctic cold front moves through an area, causing rapid drops in temperature and jumps in wind speed. Some areas closer to Lake Michigan especially further east in the Region may also get lake effect afterwards, increasing local snow totals. Here is a link to the National Weather Service website.
